Overview

Vivo is a brand that produces a lot of smartphones at affordable prices, this is to cater to a large segment of the market that is younger or does not want to spend insane amounts on a smartphone. The Vivo Y51s is such an option as well. It has ample power to be a functionally sound device for everyday use but would not suit power users, these are mostly people who like heavy gaming. It does have enough to go up to mid-level gaming. A good display, ample RAM, powerful cameras and a large batter; all this makes for a good device.

Description

Vivo is in a similar category as Realme and Oppo, in fact, it belongs to the same parent company as these brands and OnePlus as well. The Vivo line is designed to cater to a more budget-conscious segment of the market, the Y51s is also along those lines. It is a model which is in an affordable bracket and has ample power to manage daily tasks and then some. Like many devices now, it also features Dual-SIM options.

The design is simplistic and similar to a lot of the smartphones from this era, with rounded edges and a very neat camera bump. It is available in Titanium Sapphire or Crystal Symphony as the colour scheme options, the Titanium Sapphire is basically hues of blue and the Crystal Symphony is silver with a linear machined finish that is present on both.

Y51s Internals & OS

One of the good things about this device is that it is running a Snapdragon processor from Qualcomm; the Snapdragon 662 to be precise. This processor was built using the 11nm method and has the Adreno 610 integrated into it for graphics processing. If you need an affordable device for gaming the Oppo Y51s would handle your needs. There is also a large 8GB of RAM for task execution and 128GB of storage space.

In case that space is less for you, you can extend it via a microSDXC card and add on up to a Terrabyte. That kind of space can take care of a decade of your files.

The OS this smartphone is based on is Google's Android, with version 10 as the choice. This has Oppo's own Funtouch 11 layered on top as the User Interface. This also lets users have more options when it comes to customisation as the bare Android is generally kept very simple and lean. Funtouch 11 lets you choose a lot of different animations for all kinds of things from how it unlocks to what the screen does when the battery starts to charge. It even has a game mode that manages the CPU, GPU and RAM better for when you are playing your games.

Display and Camera

At 6.58 inches this display is relatively large and is FullHD with a resolution of 2408 × 1080pixels. It is based on IPS LCD technology and features multitouch as well. This makes for a good display when it comes to gaming or even when one is streaming media.

To take pictures or create content there are multiple cameras. With the main module having a triple sensor setup. The first sensor is a 48MP, the secondary is at 8MP and the last is a 2MP one. On the front is the selfie camera which has a resolution of 16MP and is fit into a neat little notch. The camera app uses these sensors in combination and can engage various modes such as Night, Portrait, Photo, Video, Pano, Live Photo, Slo-Mo, Time-Lapse, Pro and DOC. DOC is a beautification system for images and videos.

Video can be shot at 4K with a 30fps frame rate or at 1080p at a similar frame rate. There is also Electronic Image Stabilisation so that videos are not shakey and blurred.

Sensors, Connectivity and Battery

There is an accelerometer, a compass and a proximity sensor. These provide necessary feedback to various systems and apps in the smartphone so they can function properly. There is also a fingerprint sensor that is embedded into the side of the device so it can be unlocked with ease.

One can make use of the multiple connectivity options, these include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and Data. There is also a physical port for connectivity which is a USB Type-C and this device retains the 3.5mm audio jack for headphones or an AUX cable.

Vivo has given the Y51s a large battery with a capacity of 5000mAh that is based on Li-Polymer technology and features Fast Charging. This latter feature saves time when you are recharging and could possibly be in a hurry.

Comments

The price of this device is in the mid ranges, it makes for a good choice for someone who needs a decent device for regular usage but does not want to dish out too much money.
