Description

Many brands have a second wing that is made for a different demographic, Honor is such a brand from Huawei. It is their wing which is made for a younger generation with more edgy designs that have funky colours too. Honor has a lot of budget-friendly options to choose from.

The Honor 9X OS and internals

Based on the Android OS, making use of Android 9 Pie with a proprietary skin layer on top; the Honor 9X has EMUI 9.1. This lets one customise certain features more which is something the bare Android OS does not have. This includes options for icons, themes, dark mode and such.

Internally this smartphone is built around the octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 710F which is built using the 12nm method. It has four Cortex-A73 cores that are running at 2.2GHz and another four that are Cortex-A53 running 1.7GHz. The graphics rendering is managed by the ARM architecture GPU, the Mali-G51 MP4. This is a more specific low-power-consumption chipset that is common in mobile devices.

For storage, there is 128GB of space and the RAM is at 6GB, both of which are a decent amount. In case one needs more space they can extend it via a microSD card adding on another 512GB, which is more than ample if managed a bit.

Display and camera

At 6.6 inches the display is a good size. It has a resolution of 1080 x 2340p and is a capacitive multitouch screen. The pixels per inch come to 391, making for a crisp and smooth visual feel.

The most visual-heavy usage of this display is either games or one's content creation while making use of the camera systems. The Honor 9X has a triple camera setup for the rear. This starts with a 48MP f/1.8 main sensor, with a secondary that is 8MP f/2.4 for ultrawide shots and ends with the 2MP depth sensor which has an aperture of f/2.4 as well. On the front there is a sensor fixed into a motorized pop-up, this is a 16MP f/2.2 sensor.

Video shooting is different for both sides, the main camera can shoot video at 2160p; at a frame rate of 30fps. The selfie camera can shoot video at 1080p at the same frame rate of 30fps. Combined with the camera app overall these make for good cameras. The features include geo-tagging, face detection, HDR, panorama and more.

Connectivity, sensors and battery

Honor has loaded the 9X with all the connectivity modules, including infrared which is rare today. The rest are WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, FM Radio, NFC and data in the form of GPRS, Edge, 3G and 4G. The porting is done via a USB Type-C reversible, a more current version. This smartphone also has the 3.5mm audio jack.

The sensor range is also complete, with an accelerometer, a compass, a gyro, a proximity sensor and a fingerprint reader mounted on the rear.

For the battery, Honor has opted for a 4000mAh cell. This cell is based on the li-polymer technology meaning it can be made into a slimmer form factor, improving the overall form of the 9X.

Comments
