Apple iPhone XS and XS Max were released alongside the lower end model XR as the twelfth generation flagships of the iPhone. The trio is the successor to the iPhone X. The XS Max supports a surgical-grade stainless steel band, a glass back, click buttons, a speedier wireless charging and a TrueDepth camera system. The phone does not have Touch ID fingerprint scanner and neither a Home button. Instead, the phone uses the gesture navigation, introduced with the button-less iPhone X. It does support Face ID though. It also features improved cameras with Smart HDR and awesome bokeh controls.
iPhone has enhanced resistance to dust and water in this phone by upping the protection to IP68. Apple has also killed the headphone jack on the iPhone XS Max and it features a centralized Lightning port alongside speaker and microphone holes on the base of the phone. Apple includes a pair of Apple EarPods with a lightning connector with this phone. Apple has also upgraded the speakers to produce a deeper and richer sound quality.
Display & Design
The immersive 6.5-inch Super Retina custom OLED display has a resolution of 2688x1242 pixels. Thanks to its big screen, you can use split-view mode in various Apple apps, such as Mail and Calendar. The massive display makes it a great phone for gaming and movie watching, giving the users an amazing supersized experience! The phone's OLED panels are quite colourful too, covering 123% of the sRGB colour gamut. The tougher steel frame around the outside and the glass on the front and rear, give the phone a downright superior look and feel. Colours to choose from are Gold, Silver and Space Grey.
Performance, Platform & RAM
The iPhone XS Max includes a faster A12 Bionic chip built with a 7-nanometer process, that blows away all other phones in the market. Supporting the iOS 12 operating system and a 4GB RAM, there are absolutely no slowdowns in this device and using it is a clean, slick experience, with no glitches at all, thanks to the excellent integration of hardware and software. iOS 12.1 running in the XS Max supports new features like Group FaceTime, that lets you conduct video calls with up to 32 people. The phone also supports Gigabit-class LTE, resulting in blazing download/upload speeds.
The rear houses two vertical 12MP snappers with a wide-angle ƒ/1.8 aperture lens and telephoto (ƒ/2.4) aperture. The camera has bigger and deeper pixels that take in 50 % more light without compromising sharpness. The dual sensors give 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom. The two cameras are separated by a Quad-LED True Tone flash. The Smart HDR mode is an improved feature that allows for high contrast shots that are well lit and detailed.
The front 7MP camera has also been upgraded to feature the Smart HDR mode and gets the addition of the portrait mode. Capable of adjusting the background blur on portrait shots, the front camera works out the bokeh effect perfectly and the improved Smart HDR mode offers flexibility and great image quality.
Storage & Battery
Internal storage capacity on the device comes in three variants; 64 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB. Supporting a bigger 3,174mAh battery the phone can last all day with moderate to high usage. That makes it the biggest battery Apple has ever put in a smartphone. It also supports wireless charging with Qi chargers. The iPhone XS Max is dual SIM enabled, with an e-SIM embedded inside the handset.
